Information about Spain

Spain is situated in the southwest of Europe on the Iberian Peninsula with Portugal and Gibraltar at its western boundary. It meets France and the small country of Andorra on its northeast side in the Pyrenees Mountains region. It also encompasses the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

The language is Spanish although there are different dialects of the language including Andalusian, Catalan, Basque and Galician. The predominant religion is Roman Catholic.

Although Spain has a King (Juan Carlos I), the country is governed by the Las Cortes parliament. The President is Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, and the King and the government are based in the Spanish capital of Madrid.

Famous for its dazzling beaches, paella and sangria, there is much more on offer from this fascinating country. The geography and climate is diverse, with the cooler and wilder north and Basque region and warm and sandy beaches of the south and the Costa del Sol.

Steeped in history, Spain has been populated since the Bronze Age. As far back as the 700´s the country was taken over by Arab Muslims known as Moors. This period is still very much in evidence in many parts of Spain, particularly in Andalusia in the South which has many beautiful buildings in Cadiz, Seville, Cordoba and Granada.

Spain is one of the cultural centres of Europe. Its beautiful cities and towns offer a wealth of historic buildings plus some futuristic ones in some of the larger cities like Barcelona and Madrid.

Famous for its folklore and traditions: in particular, Flamenco, bullfights and fiestas, including the famous ´Running of the Bulls´ in Pamplona and dancing horses in Cadiz . Flamenco music and dance is more traditional in the south of the country, mainly in Andalusia.
