The exotic city is surrounded by tropical wide sandy beaches and warm, crystal clear seas. ![]() The most popular beaches are Porto da Barra and Farol da Barra. Here you can relax, cool off, chill, socialize, eat, drink, dance, exercise, surf and swim. The busy city beaches are good for meeting people but there are more secluded beaches on the coast. On most of the beaches there are plenty of beach bars serving excellent local food. At Farol da Barra the beach bars are more Bahian with tropical thatched huts, and the waves at Farol da Barra are excellent for surfing. The island of Itaparica is a short car ferry ride away in Bahia de Todos Santos (the Bay of All Saints). Here you will find miles of sandy shore to explore (some of it fairly secluded). There are barrier reefs protecting the shore so the sea is calm and ideal for swimming. Salvador is steeped in history and the oldest city in Brazil . In the old part (Pelourinho) you can take the lift up from the sea level port to the buildings nestled in the mountainside and experience some breathtaking views. The area of Pelourinho is very picturesque with narrow a number of old historic buildings, museums and churches hidden among cobbled streets, large squares and pretty pastel coloured houses. Eating out is one of the many pleasures Salvador has to offer, with excellent local cuisine (comida baiana). There is a great range of restaurants to choose from: some stylish and expensive but you can still eat well for a relatively low cost.
The liveliest nightlife is found in Pelourinho with lots of bars and live music. Also head for the beaches for live music, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights.

The areas around Praça Castro Alves and iCidade Baixa offer less expensive options, while the restaurants in the Pelourinho area and the beach districts are more up-market and more expensive. The seafront promenade here is lined with bars, cafés and restaurants.
