Brazil is situated in eastern South America bordering the Atlantic Ocean, with the Amazon Basin in the north and west and Brazilian Highlands in the southeast. Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world in terms of population and land mass, and encompasses so much of South America that it shares borders with its nations except Ecuador and Chile.

The Amazon carries more water to the ocean than any other river in the world, and its basin houses the rain forest which receives more than 200cm of rain every year.

The Brazilian highlands experience little seismic or volcanic activity because of their close proximity to the centre of the South American Plate. Brazil has a tropical or subtropical climate, with the rainy season occurring during the summer months while the east of the country suffers from regular periods of drought.

Brazil is divided into 26 states and a Federal District, with the capital of Brasilia in the Mato Grasso plateau, which is a well planned city built in the late 1950s. Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are two of most famous resorts in Brazil and are about 400 km apart.

Rio de Janeiro is the cultural capital of Brazil and is a major international transport hub, while Sao Paulo is growing at an incredible rate and is ripe for property investment. The Brazilians are an energetic and happy nation, which is not surprising as they live in a country of staggering beauty with huge stretches of unexplored rainforest, islands with virgin tropical beaches and endless rivers - not to mention great football players and the world famous Rio Carnival.
